Qualifying takes place over 25 months. The 10 teams will play each other team from the region in a home and home format, combining for 18 matches to determine who will be heading to Africa.

The top four teams after qualification earn an automatic berth in the 2010 World Cup. The fifth-place team will face CONCACAF’s fourth-place team in a home and home playoff series.

Brazil are the reigning South American champions after defeating Argentina in the final of the 2007 Copa America.
